Healthy Meetings

Cross the Midline
- Elbow to opposite raised knee
- With straight arms out to sides at shoulder level – bend right arm and touch right hand to left shoulder, switch
- With hands on hips, stand on left leg and cross right leg over left, toe tap on outside of left foot, switch sides
- Bend left knee and put left foot behind right leg. Reach back around with right hand and touch left foot. Reverse and put right foot behind your left leg as you touch it with your left hand.
- Windmills: toe touches to opposite foot (or lower leg) with feet spread wide apart
Active Meeting Ideas
Meeting musical chairs: every 20 minutes everyone gets up and switches chairs with another
“Stand up if…” with health messages (e.g. “stand up if you ate two green vegetables today”)
Simon Says
Physical Challenges: Challenge staff to do something physically difficult, such as standing on one foot with arms extended, or this one: Grab your nose with left hand, and grab your left earlobe with your right hand, and then quickly switch so that your right hand is on your nose and your left hand is grabbing your right earlobe.
5-4-3-2-1: Staff stand up and do five different movements in descending order. For example the facilittor would say: “Do five jumping jacks, spin around four times, hop on one foot three times, walk all the way around the classroom two times, give your neighbor one high-five (pausing in between each task for staff to do it).
Coordination (quick activities if they've been sitting for awhile!): Sitting or standing, lift your right foot and rotate it in a clockwise direction, then with your right hand draw a 6 in the air. Notice what happens? Your right leg will start to go anti-clockwise. –OR- Thumbs up – opposite hand – pointer finger out. Switch.
Hold Walking Meetings: Especially effective for one-on-one meetings, staff coaching, evaluations (more personal connection)
Other Healthy Meeting Ideas
Help staff connect and kick off meetings by using:
- "5-3-1": Staff take 5 deep breaths, name 3 good things, and commit to 1 Random Act of Kindness for the day
- Connection questions: "What motivates you?", "What's on your bucket list?", "What are you most passionate about?", "What are you most proud of?", "If you could go any place right now, where would you go?", "What's your perfect day?", "If you were a battery, what level would you be today?", "What's your favorite movie?"
- Nudge/cues: Make it "normal" to stand up and stretch and move around during the day, take a walk over lunch, host healthy potlucks/staff appreciation, incorporate wellness into staff meetings, etc.
- Build a culture of health by increasing intrinsic motivators: purpose, play, competency, autonomy, relatedness
